In today’s Guardian author and social historian Hallie Rubenhold has announced her plans to commemorate the lives of the women murdered by Jack the Ripper with a new mural in Whitechapel. She claims Ripper tours are ‘atrocious’.
One of the most popular questions we get asked by people is if we provide a Jack the Ripper tour. Yes we do. If we didn’t, they would just go with someone else. Is it not better to provide a Ripper tour which truly reflects the Whitechapel of 1888, the murky world of Victorian society, the unimaginable levels of depravity suffered by many and the development of the London police force which all played an instrumental role in these unsolved crimes. Surely that is a story worth telling?
Unlike other Ripper tours we do not sensationalise these horrific murders. These were murders of vulnerable women in reduced circumstances who once killed were disfigured and dehumanised.
Our Jack the Ripper tour guide is Jenny Phillips. Jenny studied the history of Whitechapel / Spitalfields under Professor William J Fishman, a Senior Research Fellow of Queen Mary's University and has been hosting Jack the Ripper walking tours since the mid-nineties. We too agree with Hallie Rubenhold, that the murderer’s victims weren’t sex workers. They were women stuck in an unimaginable situation. They were simply trying to survive.
