The Best Places To Eat Cheese in London

It's cheese lover's day!

To celebrate, I’ve rounded up my favourite cheesemongers, street food stalls and cheese boards.

My Best Cheese Shops in London

Paxton & Whitfield

Having started as a cheese stall in London's Aldwych market in 1742, the now partnership of Paxton & Whitfield is my go-to place for cheese. Jermyn Street’s branch of Paxton & Whitfield is one of London’s most iconic shops.

It’s beloved of both the royal family and well-heeled Londoners. As well as the usual Stilton, cheddar and brie offerings there are options for those more adventurous including a goat’s milk cheese from the West Country that’s washed with cider brandy and wrapped in a vine leaf, an ash-and-sea-salt-coated pyramid-shaped cerney and a sheep’s cheese covered in dried herbs only available in Spring.

They also offer a wonderful selection of cheese-themed hampers. Read their cheese-related - myths: https://www.paxtonandwhitfield.co.uk/cheese-myths

Paxton & Whitfield, 93 Jermyn Street, SW1Y 6JE.

Neal’s Yard Dairy

This was my local cheese shop when I lived in Covent Garden. The other branches can be found in Borough Market and Spa Terminus Market

Their cheese offering changes regularly providing a selection of British and Irish cheeses from around 40 artisan producers. There’s a particularly lovely Innes log, Isle of Mull cheddar and crozier blue.

Tasting is encouraged; and regular cheese-filled events are also held, including cheese and wine pairing. When is Cheese and wine lover’s day?!

Neal’s Yard Dairy, 17 Shorts Gardens, Covent Garden, WC2H 9AT. Other branches are in Borough Market and Spa Terminus Market, Bermondsey https://www.londonguidedwalks.co.uk/blog/spa-terminus-maltby-street-markets

Cheese at Leadenhall

Need an independent speciality cheesemonger in the heart of the city of London, Leadenhall Market? Then Cheese at Leadenhall is perfect for you. This is a friendly place to come and talk all about cheese. If you can’t wait to eat cheese then take a seat and tuck in for a casual lunch with a wine and port bar. Outdoor heaters and blankets provided.

My Best Cheese Boards in London

A decent cheeseboard is hard to find. There are so many elements once needs to consider; crackers or bread, pickles, fruit and of course the main event itself.

The Booking Office, St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel
I very much enjoyed this cheeseboard. Along with the excellent surroundings and polite staff the cheese portions are generous and its nice to have a selection of biscuits too. A little pickle and some grapes finished it off nicely.

The Union Tavern, 52 Lloyd Baker St, Islington
There is something to be said of quantity of quality. This has been the only cheeseboard where my husband had tucked in using both hands! You get a nice selection of cheeses and pickles but we did have to ask for more biscuits. They were happy to oblige.

There does seem to be something exciting when they wheel you a shiny trolley over, filled with cheese, much to the envy of other guests. These two provide a choice of cheese on said trolleys.

Clos Maggiore, 33 King St, Covent Garden

A nice selection of French cheeses. A little stingy on the biscuits and no pickle but was nice to have a wide variety of cheeses to choose from, not the average offering.

Brasserie Zedel, 20 Sherwood St, Soho
The choice was limited but you do get some juicy grapes. You do need to know the kind of cheese you like though as I have found the staff not to be too knowledgeable.
