Sunset Boulevard with Glenn Close

Sunset Boulevard with Glenn Close

Glenn Close reprises her Tong Award-winning role as Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical Sunset Boulevard at the London Coliseum. This was something of a treat as I was only a teenager when I was introduced to one of the lesser-known musicals of Andrew Lloyd Webber. The semi-staged performance was a contrast to the opulent surrounding of the London Coliseum.

The 48-strong onstage orchestra was beautifully conducted by Michael Reed whose splendiferous sound feels like warm chocolate melting slowly and satisfactorily down the throat.

Close has already played Norma in Los Angeles and New York and yet her vocal talents are not as sharp as they have been her emotional control of the role, delivering simple lines which were magnificently manipulated "I am big. It's the pictures that got small."

Cast includes the well-defined Michael Xavier as Joe Gillis, a struggling journalist. He opens Act II in an eye-opening and unexpected outfit. Swedish Fred Johanson as Max Von Mayerling reprises his role from the Gothenburg Opera. His voice warms the soul and his physical performance is accurate and perfectly understated. Lichfield town's very own Siobhan Dillon is Betty Shaefer, a tenacious writer and love interest. Dillon, however, adds warmth and vibrancy to one of the weaker roles, especially in terms of choice of songs.

The main pleasure of Director Lonny Price’s most recent production lies in watching Close master a role which has often been made monstrous. To quote Joe Gillis “There's nothing tragic about being fifty. Not unless you're trying to be twenty".

Glenn Close's iconic costumes by English Costume Designer Anthony Powell who had also designed Glenn Close’s costumes when she played Cruella Deville in Disney’s 101 Dalmatians and 102 Dalmatians

With a strict run of 43 performances it’s worth grabbing while you can and experience history being made.

Eat a rainbow on Brick Lan

March 30, 2016
Londoners can now eat a rainbow on Brick Lane thanks to the rainbow coloured beigels on sale at Brick Lane's Beigel Shop (that's the yellow signed one). It is Britain's oldest and very first open 24hrs 365 days a year beigel shop. The Beigel Shop can be found at 155 Brick Lane, E1 6SB.

A plain beigel is 50p and after being ensured they tasted the same as regular beigels I decided to try a filling of Nutella to satisfy a craving I have had for a few days and so having parted with my nutty, choc...

Nell Gwynn at Apollo Theatre

March 22, 2016

The story of Nell Gwynn is surrounded with intrigue. A woman who rose up the ranks quickly due to the favour of Charles II and then disappears from the history books.

A Shakespeare’s Globe production is written by Jessica Swale is an English theatre director and writer and playwright. Nell's story was engrossing and Gemma Atherton commanded the stage. The hat joke was truly magnifique.

The set was cleverly constructed and fully utilised by the performers with having designated area...

A taste of old Europe in London

March 4, 2016

As a tour guide I am often asked where to eat in London. Having worked and lived in central London for many years I have been fortunate to have sampled many a menu. The Delaunay is a treat.

The restaurant is the latest project from Chris Corbin and Jeremy King, famous for the Wolseley.  You don't have to cross the Channel for a taste of old Europe. The main dining room is superb, panelled and spacious. We very much enjoyed our table (no. 14) which meant we could sit next to one anot...

Mothering Sunday or Mother's Day?

February 22, 2016

The British tradition of Mothering Sunday is rather muddled. Mothering Sunday has been celebrated in the UK on the fourth Sunday in Lent since at least the C16th.

In the early twentieth century Mothering Sunday underwent a revival thanks to Constance Penswick Smith (1878-1938). It was in 1913 where she was inspired after reading a newspaper report of Anna Jarvis’s campaign for Mother's Day in America.

What is the connection between Laetare Sunday and Mother's Day?
Laetare Sunday g...
